概要

「キリストの受難」や「ドン・キホーテ」のシリーズなど、彼の代表作を見て明らかなように、ビュフェは大画面の作品を好んでいました。初期の作品は、パリのアトリエが狭かったこともあり、大画面の作品は相対的に少ないものの、1951年に南仏のナンスにアトリエを移すと、広い壁を確保できたビュフェは、長辺が4ｍを超えるような作品を次々に生み出してゆきます。

その一方で、定期的に小さな作品の制作も行っていました。壁に掛けやすい小さな画面に収められたモチーフは、それ故に密度の高いイメージを生み出しています。1984年には「様々なテーマの小品」と題した個展を行っており、大画面とは異なる、面積が限られているからこそ可能な新しい表現を模索していました。

At Musée Bernard Buffet, a special feature titled “Buffet’s Small Works” is currently on view in the main building’s left corridor.

As is evident from his major works such as La passion du Christ and the Don Quixote series, Buffet had a clear preference for large-scale paintings. In his early years, however, the number of such large works was relatively limited, partly because his studio in Paris was quite small. After relocating his studio to Nanse, in the south of France, in 1951, Buffet gained access to much larger wall space and began producing a succession of monumental works, some exceeding four meters in length.

At the same time, he continued to create small-scale pieces on a regular basis. The motifs captured on these more compact canvases—easy to hang on a wall—often result in images of remarkable density and intensity. In 1984, he held a solo exhibition titled Various Thematic Works, in which he explored new forms of expression made possible precisely by the limited surface area of smaller paintings, offering a contrast to his large-scale compositions.
