Paris, 1989

Paris, often nicknamed the “City of Art,” was for Bernard Buffet not only his birthplace but also an important motif in his landscape painting. He depicted Paris’s famous landmarks and cityscapes—such as the Eiffel Tower and Sacré-Cœur—time and again. His 1957 solo exhibition “Paris Landscapes” was significant as the first show to take this city as its central theme.

Even in his later years, Buffet continued to paint scenes of Paris. In particular, he worked intensively on the subject in 1989. While carrying forward elements of his early style—such as overcast skies and bold, forceful lines—he also created landscapes distinctive of his later period by effectively incorporating yellow and blue tones. This small feature focuses on the group of Paris landscapes produced in 1989, highlighting the characteristics of Buffet’s landscape painting in the latter half of his career.
