人の姿は遠い過去から、芸術家たちによって最もよく取り上げられてきた題材です。特に絵画においては、人物が単独で描かれることは少なく、通常はその周囲の室内や風景とともに表されていました。人物の年齢、職業、社会的地位などに応じて、居住する部屋の豪華さや質素さは異なることから、その人物に相応しい部屋の描写が求められました。時代を問わず、絵画における人の姿と周囲の設定とは、不可分の関係にありました。

こうした‘ひと’ とその ‘周り’との関わりは、20世紀以降のアーティストたちにとっても、依然重要な関心事でした。空間をつくる芸術である彫刻では、作品があるとないとで、設置された場所の見え方がかなり違ってきます。したがって‘ひと’ とその ‘周り’との関係は、とても緊密になっています。

この展覧会では、20世紀以降の当館コレクションから、人の姿をモティーフにした絵画や彫刻作品を選び、‘ひと’とその‘周り’がどのような意図で、どのように表現されたのかを考えます。

The human figure has long been an important subject for artists, and especially in painting, it was common for figures to be depicted alongside their surrounding landscapes or interiors. Depending on the subject’s age, occupation, and social status, the depiction of their room or environment was carefully chosen to match them, creating a close relationship between the figure and its surroundings. This relationship remained significant for artists in the 20th century and beyond, especially in sculpture, where the appearance of the work changes depending on the space in which it is placed, further strengthening the connection between the figure and its environment. This exhibition selects paintings and sculptures from the museum’s collection since the 20th century that focus on the human figure, exploring how the figure and its surroundings are represented.
